News: Sager offers hands-on labs for sixth grade science
posted: October 3, 2008

Students learn by doing and that is what labs in Tierni Sager’s classes at Bales Intermediate are all about.

In her H20 Importance Lab, the sixth grade science students converted Standard US units to SI metric units and incorporated healthy and wise math activities.

Bales Lab 1The class learned that they shouldn’t let themselves get thirsty during the school day. Studies show that a mere drop of 2 percent of body water can trigger undesirable side effects.Bales Lab 2

These effects can include fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, difficulty focusing, fatigue and yawning, erratic and moody behavior, and a craving for sweets, sugar and caffeine.

In Sager’s measurement lab, sixth graders used lab equipment to do a hands-on measurement assignment. Bales Lab 4

The students left the classroom and measured length, liquid volume, and mass at various parts of the campus.

For example, the students measured the length of the front door of Bales to the flagpole. They calculated the mass of a Polly Pocket, lock and keys, and an index card. They measured the liquid volume of a coffee cup and a squirt of water.
