The class learned that they shouldn’t let themselves get thirsty during the school day. Studies show that a mere drop of 2 percent of body water can trigger undesirable side effects.
These effects can include fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math, difficulty focusing, fatigue and yawning, erratic and moody behavior, and a craving for sweets, sugar and caffeine.
An adolescent brain functions much better if 1-1.5 liters of quality water is consumed during the average 6.5 hours the students are in school.
In Sager’s measurement lab, sixth graders used lab equipment to do a hands-on measurement assignment.
The students left the classroom and measured length, liquid volume, and mass at various parts of the campus.
For example, the students measured the length of the front door of Bales to the flagpole. They calculated the mass of a Polly Pocket, lock and keys, and an index card. They measured the liquid volume of a coffee cup and a squirt of water. |
