News: Windsong students feed the homeless
posted: October 4, 2008

Finding teachable moments in everyday life situations is exactly what two teachers at Windsong Intermediate recently "cooked" up for their sixth graders.

In class, students have been discussing the many great life lessons that Jerry Spinelli inspires one to ponder through his novel, Maniac Magee.  One of the lessons is to have compassion for the homeless and those less fortunate.

Early in the morning on September 27, students, parents and teachers met at Windsong and caravanned into Houston to help feed the homeless at Fishes and Loaves.  Feed Homeless 3

There were close to 45 students, parents and teachers that participated.

Students made goodie bags for the homeless, colored placemats for the tables, and then served the meal. Feed Homeless 4

“The kids really embraced the whole experience.  They were able to experience first hand the satisfaction that comes with serving others.  It was a great day for all,” Sonnier said.
