In anticipation of the 35th anniversary of a State Championship team, FISD has planned a slate of events that honor the original team and the accomplishments of that group.
Dr. Myrlene Kennedy, Assistant Superintendent of Student Affairs, is chairing the events.
Coach of the winning team was Henry Winston after whom the current stadium is named.
The 1974 winning team will be inducted into the Friendswood High School Hall of Honor prior to the game.
Halftime will honor the players and a post-game reception will also be held.
Team players include Bobby Kirkpatrick, Glen Dickson, Keith Morgenroth, Irby Winston, Kiel Winston, Chuck Giammalva, Scott Weaver, Cory Criswell, Steve VanMeter, Matt Taylor, Ted Rauch, Kim Reed, Gary Humes, Craig Clardy, Jimmy New, Danny Fleetwood, Hal Hoskins, Allen Friloux, Phil Johnston, Jay Mears, James Grimsrud, Johnny Mears, Allen Brunson, Ricky Allen, Allen Bennett, Don Jones, Eddie Stanton, Wes English, Robert Andrews, and Steve Robinson.
Kennedy fondly remembers that fall.
“Eat ‘em up from Caesar Galli, hall decorations that covered every square inch of wall space in the halls and malls, the cheerleaders made sure the cheers at the pep rallies could be heard by every opponent, the Wranglerettes were new to the scene but becoming the Pride of Friendswood High School, the mighty Mustang band playing The Horse and March Grandioso, some favorites of fans and reminding everyone on Friday morning it was game day as they marched through the halls playing the fight song, the young men known as the Mustang Guard running many miles as they carried the Mustang up and down the field following each score, Linn Eignus, the voice of the Mustangs making the calls, from the press box, the drive back from Nacogdoches following the celebrating as State Champions, and celebrating a perfect season in the mall of the high school. A season worth remembering,” Dr. K said.
The 1973 Mustang Football Team set a record that which will probably never be matched. The freshman and JV teams were both 10-0 and the Fighting Mustangs were 15-0. The first team defense was scored on only once before the playoffs and the defense as a whole allowed only three touchdowns before the playoffs.
The offense ran the Houston Veer to perfection averaging 27 points per game before the playoffs and 35 points over 15 games. The widest margin of victory was 49 points and the closest was 13 which came in the State finals against Hooks 28-15.
“It is time to celebrate the success of the 1973 season and cherish the memories of the young people that made us all proud to be a part of a special time at FHS,” Dr. K said.
The Hall of Honor induction will begin at 5:30 pm in the FHS auditorium. The Hall of Honor Recognition will take place at halftime and a reception after the game will take place in the FHS Library.
If anyone knows of any players in this season (listed above), please encourage them to contact Dr. Kennedy at 281-482-1267 or email to mkennedy@fisdk12.net. |
