This order will give the student optimal knowledge and skills in this department. Personal & Family Development is highly recommended to be taken before any of the upper level courses. Food Science & Technology must have the prerequisite class of Nutrition and Food Science.

APPAREL/FASHION DESIGN
Grades: 10-12
Credit: 1/2
Prerequisite: Personal & Family Development recommended
Students will apply knowledge and skills to function effectively as consumers in the textile and apparel industry. They will explore fashion trends, care and maintenance for apparels, and analyze the impact of clothing selections. Students will construct home fashions and garments. Through the study of textiles and the apparel industry, students will examine career options. Students will be required to purchase materials for and complete three sewing projects.

NUTRITION AND FOOD SCIENCE
Grades: 10-12
Credit: 1/2
Prerequisite: Personal & Family Development recommended
(Can also count as college credit if taken with Food Science and Technology, See Tech Prep – ATC)
Students will study the principles of food science, technology, and nutrition to make informed choices to promote good health. This is a laboratory course using knowledge and skills needed in food preparation. Students will explore careers in the foods and nutrition industry.

FOOD SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY
Grade: 10-12
Credit: 1/2
Prerequisite: Nutrition and Food Science with an 80 average
(Can also count as college credit if taken with Nutrition and Food Science, See Tech Prep-ATC)
This is a laboratory course utilizing principles of nutrition, technology, and food science. Students will explore careers in the foods and nutrition industry.

PERSONAL AND FAMILY DEVELOPMENT (An exploration of all home economics subjects.)
Grades: 9-12
Credit: 1
Prerequisite: None
Part I: Relationships, Child Development/Parenting, and Nutrition/Foods
Students will study self-awareness and relationships with family and friends. The area of Child Development will be covered as well as parenting skills. They will also study the basics of nutrition, safety in the kitchen, and plan, prepare, and serve simple foods.
Part II: Management, Housing/Interior Design, and Apparels
Students will focus on management of time, money, and careers. The course will introduce the concepts and skills of housing and interior design. They will explore the apparels industry and apply skills to construction of a home fashion item and a garment.
Students will be required to purchase materials for and complete a sewing project.

HOUSING
Grades: 10-12
Credit: 1/2
Prerequisite: Personal and Family Development recommended
Students will address decision-making skills related to housing needs, identify architectural styles, and apply elements and principles of design to living environments. Individuals will use knowledge and skills related to construction by designing a home. Students will explore careers in the housing industry.

INTERIOR DESIGN
Grades: 10-12
Credit: 1/2
Prerequisite: Housing recommended
Students will develop skills needed to decorate a home or business by selection of backgrounds, furniture, and lighting. Emphasis is placed on elements and principles of design. Students will apply their knowledge to actually designing and decorating a home.
Students will explore careers in the interior design industry. Students will be required to have some art supplies.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT/PREPARATION FOR PARENTING
Grades: 10-12
Credit: 1/2
Prerequisite: Personal & Family Development recommended
Students will develop knowledge and skills related to child development, relationships with children, and childcare. The course will focus on parenting skills and responsibilities of being a parent. It includes caring for a computerized baby for a period of time.
Students will explore careers in the childcare industry.
