MEDICAL SCIENCE (HSTE I)
Grades: 10-12
Credit: 1
Prerequisite: Biology

This course gives an overview of the health care field and the many types of career opportunities available. The course includes the study of medical terminology, ethics, legal issues, anatomy and physiology, disease processes, critical attributes of patient
relationships, and management of patient care. Students receive CPR certification, training in first aid techniques, and vital signs assessment. This course is recommended for anyone interested in a health care career.

CLINICAL ROTATION (HSTE II)
Grades: 11-12
Credit: 2
Prerequisite: Medical Science; Must provide own transportation

This course is designed to allow students to explore a variety of health careers by shadowing health care professionals in many different settings. Clinical opportunities include options like rotations through physical therapy, radiology, nursing care, pharmacy, emergency medicine, surgery, nursery, intensive care, laboratory, and veterinary medicine. The course involves clinical experience under the supervision of the coordinator and health care personnel and classroom experience. Students interested must have reliable transportation to and from the hospital and other health care settings.

MEDICAL INTERNSHIP (HSTE III)
Grades: 12
Credit: 2
Prerequisite: Clinical Rotation (HSTE II); Must provide own transportation
An occupationally specific course designed to provide knowledge and skills toward certification or licensure in an allied health career.
Students develop advanced clinical skills necessary for employment in the health care industry or continued education in health careers. Students must have reliable transportation to and from clinical sites.

MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY
Grade: 11 -12
Credit: 1/2
Prerequisite: Biology
(Can also count as college credit. See Tech Prep – ATC)
A course designed to develop a working knowledge of the language of medicine. Students acquire word-building skills by learning prefixes, suffixes, roots, and abbreviations. By relating terms to body systems, students identify proper use of words
in a medical environment. Knowledge of medical terminology enhances the student’s ability to successfully secure employment or pursue advanced education in health care. This course will be linked to Mental Health.

MENTAL HEALTH
Grade: 11 – 12
Credit: 1/2
Prerequisite: Biology, Psychology
This course is an introduction to mental health services, careers, history, agencies, current issues, and the difference between functional and dysfunctional behaviors. Students develop an awareness of the factors that affect mental health by exploring traditional and emerging treatment modalities. This course will be linked to Medical Terminology.
