Parent Letter

Dear Parents and Students:

Re: Wednesday, March 5th
Reading 9th/10th & 11th Language Arts TAKS Testing Day
Early Dismissal Seniors Only

Our 9th, 10th and 11th graders will be taking the English Language Arts TAKS test on Wednesday March 5, 2008. Please make sure your child is not absent on March 5th. It is of the utmost importance that your child is in attendance on March 5th, which is a state mandated testing day. Arrangements for doctor appointments and other engagements should be avoided if possible. We understand that illness cannot be avoided and does happen; therefore, the state has instituted a makeup day for 10th graders only on Friday, March 6th.

Our 12th graders will have early dismissal at 10:30 am. All seniors off campus 1st period will report at their regularly scheduled time. Attendance will be taken and will count towards exemptions if absent. Seniors in need of transportation home must sign up before the afternoon of Monday, March 3rd in the Assistant Principals office.

You will also find two documents regarding FISD procedures for cellular telephones/ electronic devices and honor statements. Please go over these two documents with your student to communicate their importance and why these measures are being implemented.

Please make sure your child is well rested, eats a good breakfast and is on time the morning of March 5th. Have your student arrive by 8:25 am on the morning of March 5th. This will assist in the success of your child. Thank you again for your help.

Sincerely,

Procedures Regarding
Cellular Telephones and Electronic Devices

In order to maintain and preserve the security and confidential integrity of state tests, communication devices will NOT be allowed in any testing area on the days of testing. A communication device includes but is not limited to cellular telephones, pagers, music and/or recording devices, video recorders, cameras, and organizational tools (PalmPilot, Blackberry, etc.).

If a student is found to possess a communication device while inside an active testing room, the test of that student may be voided and would not be scored by the state. Students are strongly encouraged to NOT bring these devices on test days. Students who forget and bring a device will have the opportunity to relinquish the device to the test administrator before the test begins. The students' name will be attached to the device and will be returned to the owner once all testing is complete or the student leaves the room.

Students and parents need to be aware that these communication devices can compromise the integrity of a test.

Thank you for your cooperation in advance.

Honor Statement

Re: Honor Statements for TAKS

Dear Parents and Students,

This letter is to let you know of a change that the Texas Education Agency (TEA) has made in testing procedures for the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). Beginning this spring, students in grades 9,10, and exit level will be asked to sign an honor statement before taking TAKS tests. The honor statement is shown below. This statement will be printed on each student's answer sheet, and students will be asked to sign it before the test begins.

By signing my name, I agree that I will not give or receive unauthorized assistance during the test. I understand that giving or receiving unauthorized assistance during the test is cheating and may result in the invalidation of my test results.

"Invalidation" of test results means that the student's test would not be scored and the student would not receive test results.

The TAKS tests are required by both state and federal law. The test results are used to monitor and improve public education for all Texas students. The addition of an honor statement is one of several steps the state of Texas is taking to ensure that each student's test results are an accurate indicator of his or her academic performance. Other state testing programs and college entrance exams include similar honor statements.

I hope that I can count on your support of this new procedure.

Sincerely,

Mark Griffon
