| A musician must make music, an artist
must paint, a poet must write if he is to be ultimately at peace
with himself. What one can be, one must be. -- Abraham Moslow |

Houston Livestock and Rodeo Art Competition
The FHS Houston Livestock and Rodeo Show School Art winners this year are: Tory Treybig, who, once again, won Best of Show, McKenna Harclerode, who also, once again, won a Gold Medal. Jack Corpening also won a Gold Medal. Judging took place at the Art Alliance at Clear Lake, across from the NASA Space Center. Their artwork will be exhibited for the duration of the Houston Rodeo so if you plan to attend the rodeo you can see the Houston area School Art Exhibit and enjoy the artwork of our students.
VASE - Visual Art Scholastic Event
This event is our regional art competition where art students can enter two high quality art pieces. Students are interviewed by an art teacher from another region and are rated according to how they put their artwork together, where their ideas came from, what they think of it, etc. They are rated and given a written critique. If their score is high enough they can receive a Regional Gold Medal. The highest ratings are re-judged by a different group of teachers and they choose a percentage from each of the four levels and those students are invited to attend State VASE at U. of H. Clear Lake in April. This year‚ our regional competition will be Saturday, February 27 at Aldine High School.
Other Art Department News
Jenifer Sundrla, one of our FHS Art Teachers, was invited to participate in the Home Makeover in Kemah. The home was built and decorated in a week for a family with 13 children, some with special needs, that had been living in two FEMA trailers since IKE took their home. Jenifer’s creative and outstanding artwork was seen on her website, The Painted Pear, and she was asked to help decorate the home which includes some of her art pieces. This will be nationally televised sometime in April. Go Jenifer!!
Bryce Burton, an art senior, has applied and been accepted to The Art Institute of Chicago, one of the top art schools in the nation.
