DON'T GET SCAMMED! STUDENTS & PARENTS OFFERED WEB RESOURCE TO AVOID SCHOLARSHIP SCAMS

Scholarship Scams Tip Sheet by FastWeb

Students and parents can use a free Web site (to access scholarship scam information quickly and easily. The Web site, www.nacac.com/preventscams.html, provides students, parents and counselors with up-to-date scholarship-scam-related news and links to Federal Trade Commission (FTC) reports, as well as other helpful information from the FTC and Department of Education. The Web page also links directly to the FTC's consumer complaint form if families believe they have been scammed.

"Too many students and their parents are dissuaded from applying to college due to finances and high college costs," NACAC President Frank Sachs said. "To add insult to injury, unscrupulous individuals lie in wait to prey on families who may not have experience in the financial-aid process."

As college costs and student enrollments continue to rise, more and more disreputable companies and individuals attempt to cash in on these rising costs with scholarship scams. In fact, federal estimates show that families lose millions of dollars to scholarship fraud every year.

"NACAC-and the NACAC Web site-is a natural place for students, parents and counselors to go with very real concerns about questionable scholarship sources," Sachs said. "Our hope is that this new Web page will make it easier for families to not only report scholarship scams when and if they encounter them, but to also avoid them altogether, finding viable, trustworthy sources and navigating their way through the process as smoothly as possible."

With the help of NACAC's scholarship scam Web page, students and parents can:

-- Report scholarship scams, using the link to the Federal Trade Commission's Web site

-- Download a "6 Signs That Your Scholarship is Sunk" poster

-- Download or order NACAC's financial aid publications

-- Apply for financial aid, using a link to the U.S. Department of Education's FAFSA Web form

-- Receive and review the latest scholarship-scam news.

Also available from NACAC is "Applying for Financial Aid in Seven Easy Steps," a financial aid reference brochure for college-bound students and their parents.
