Dear Parents,

The first nine weeks has come to an end and report cards will go home on Friday. Remember, you can keep up with your child's grades throughout the year by accessing our Parent Connect grades online. Go to our website and click on the parent tab at the top of the screen. On the right hand side you will see "Access to Grades". Just click and go!

If grades are a source of anxiety for you and your child, please note the helpful tips listed below, courtesy of Denise Witmer at: http://parentingteens.about.com/cs/homeworkhelp/a/doing_homework.htm And the Child Development Institute at: http://www.childdevelopmentinfo.com/learning/studytips.shtml

Homework Tips
Homework 1. Pick a time and stick to it. Routines
make teens feel safe and secure.
2. Turn off cell phones and televisions.
3. Designate specific areas for homework and studying.
4. Have your teen come up with his/her own routine. This way the student is apt to stick with it. Set up a consequence if your teen does not stick to the routine.
5. Don't let your child become overwhelmed with too many activities. It can't all be done!
6. Get on top of the situation before there is a problem. Check grades online, conference with teachers, etc.
7. Organize study and homework projects. Get a large calendar and write down when big projects are do, exams will be given, etc.
8. Watch for signs of frustration during homework sessions.
9. Teach your child that studying is more than just doing homework assignments. Encourage your child to:
a. Take notes as he reads a chapter
b. Learn to skim material
c. Learn to study tables and charts
d. Learn to summarize what he has read in his own words
e. Learn to make his own flashcards for quick review of dates, formulas, vocabulary words, etc.
10. Drop it! Sounds crazy, right? It is the one tip that is going to keep your sanity in check. Parents of teens often have trouble figuring out where to hold up the responsibilities our teens have and when to back off. With school, our teens need to 'hold the bag.' What grades they earn are the grades they have earned, and in no way should these grades reflect on us as parents. After we have given them the time, the space, and the tools, they need to do the learning.
