Adolescent Development
Decision-making is a normal part of everyday
life, but for young adolescents, this skill
is even more critical because decisions they
make could have long-term or even lifelong
repercussions. Below is a decision-making
model called, The Nine C's of
Decision-Making.
Choice: adolescents make better
decisions when they have options and the
self-confidence to act on those choices
Comprehension: the understanding that
good decision-making requires logical thought
and is a cognitive process.
Creative problem-solving: the ability to
identify the problem, generate multiple ways
to solve the problem, combine possible
solutions to produce new options, select a
logical sequence of steps to arrive at the
desired outcome.
Compromise: being able to understand the
perspective of others and being willing to
negotiate a satisfactory solution for all
parties involved.
Consequentiality: the ability to
accurately evaluate the ramifications of
one's choices.
Correctness of choice: the ability to
choose the option that will produce the most
favorable outcome.
Credibility: the ability to evaluate the
accuracy of information supplied and used to
make good decision.
Consistency: the ability of an
individual to make wise decisions on a
regular basis.
Commitment: the willingness to persist
and follow through on decisions made.
