If you were at Family Character Night on Tuesday,
then you'll remember that Phillip Hoose, co-author of the award-winning
children's book, Hey, Little Ant, announced a national
essay contest in which students in grades K-3 are encouraged
to answer the question at the end of the book, "What do
you think that Kid should do?"
Interestingly enough, Mr. Hoose said that
it took him nine years to get Ant published in part because of
ending it with this open-ended question. Publishers told him
that only Dr. Seuss published books of that nature. But he persisted
and Tricycle Press out of California finally decided to take
a chance and print the little jewel.
February 1, 2008, marks the opening day of
the Ant Essay Contest. Students can answer that question online
by visiting the book's official website at www.heylittleant.com.
To know more about the contest and the history behind the book's
success, read the Press Release
before you get busy formulating your answer. Westwood's own counselor,
Barbara Gruener, has enjoyed the privilege of sitting on the
"ANTvisory Board" and has been selected as one of the
judges for this national writing challenge. So what are you waiting
for? Put your pencil to paper, write your draft, and log in to
submit your creative answer.
