Citizenship by George!

Westwood's second and third graders turned back the pages in their character book on Wednesday when George Washington made a stop at their school.

Dressed in an authentic costume made by a museum staff member at Valley Forge, James Hodges, who believes he bears an uncanny resemblance to our first president, visited with our little citizens to share a few of George's life stories and reinforce this month's spotlight pillar, citizenship. Talking in first person as if he were President Washington himself, Mr. Hodges stayed in character for the duration of his visit.

With his ax in hand, he told students about his infamous cherry tree incident and relayed that, despite the fact that it was his dad's favorite tree, his dad was so proud of him for telling the truth. Towering way over the students at 6 foot 6 inches tall, George made a lasting impression as he shook hands with our students on their way back to class. It truly was a historical treat.

This inspirational assembly was underwritten by a generous group of Westwood grandparents who strongly support our character-building efforts; we thank them for bringing citizenship to life for us today. For more information about James Hodges, you can visit www.leadershipbygeorge.com online.
