With our application going on, we feel honored
to compete for the title of National School of Character (NSOC).
As you may know, we were recognized as a finalist last year.
Becoming a School of Character is not easy. We appreciate the
teamwork that it takes, the commitment to character-building
that's involved, and the dedication to our children's future
that's at stake. Westwood is blessed with a winning combination
of whatever it takes. People in this community are always willing
to go that extra mile; that's what sets us apart.
Every year, the Character
Education Partnership (CEP) names ten public and private
schools and districts (K-12) as National Schools of Character
for their outstanding work in character education. In 2008, winning
schools and districts will receive a $20,000 award. Winners may
differ in their methods and implementation but all have comprehensive,
exemplary character education programs that exemplify CEP's Eleven
Principles of Effective Character Education and
serve as models for others. The criteria used to judge National
Schools of Character award winners is CEP's Revised Character
Education Quality Standards.
We'll keep you posted as we hear from the
NSOC people in Washington, D.C. this spring. We're hopeful to
get a site visit so that they'll be able to see firsthand how
we're dynamically shaping hearts and minds for the future.
