BEAR Night

Photographs may be enlarged.

Be Enthusiastic About Reading, that's the message behind Westwood's third-grade BEAR Night. Coordinated by the librarian, Lana Hane, and her colleague Beth Loveless, and supported by the PTO, BEAR Night is the reward that our older students earn for having spent several weeks reading every night (they do get one skip night) for a 15-minute block of time. The promise they make is that they'll read books on their level and keep a reading log for both parents and student to sign. They also monitor their behavior at school very closely during that time since there is a stipulation about having good conduct to reserve a spot at this fun-filled event.
The night began with pizza and cookie cake for the little bookworms, followed by an interactive magic show to get their creative juices flowing. After the performance, students traveled in groups to fun stations like Barnyard Boogie in the gym, Flashlight Fun Reading inside tents in a darkened library, and Book Creations in the Art room. There, students became authors to write and decoratively illustrate their own stories into a keepsake memory book. This Westwood tradition proved once again this year that it certainly pays off to Be Enthusiastic About Reading!
