| First it was the
clicking of knitting needles that called Bales students back
to Westwood, now it's the melodic sounds of the recorder beckoning
them to return. Nine fourth-grade students have been chosen
by music teacher Laura Rachita to bear the prestigious title
of Recorder Mentor. They volunteer to come by before school twice
a week, on Tuesdays and Fridays, to help teach third-graders
to master the playing of their little plastic flute-like instruments.
Under the tutelage of these Bales Mentors, our third-grade students
are participating in Recorder Karate, an incentive program that
encourages students to practice and finetune their skills and
allows them to earn karate belts for their recorders as their
playing advances through higher levels of difficulty. The recorder
unit will culminate in a Recorder Concert for all third graders
the week of March 7 through 14, just before spring break. |
