| After studying all about penguins,
first graders made life-sized portraits of their favorite kind.
The drawings came in many shapes and sizes based on what they'd
learned about the one they'd chosen like the Little Blue, the
Emperor, the King, the Rockhopper, and the Chinstrap. In Mrs.
Quigley's class, the favorite seemed to be the Little Blue Penguin
this year. These little learners became penguin experts with
information about the penguins' predators, their habitats, their
diets, their size, and their unique features and colorings.
During the unit, students graphed their findings as they researched
the birds to compare and contrast the different breeds. They
even learned a few new verbs; why not ask a first grader what
it means for a penguin to porpoise or to fledge? |
