| A Character Connection |
| Frances Levisee
from Texas First Bank visited first-grade teachers at Westwood
on Monday with a special surprise that made a character connection.
She presented them all with a complimentary copy of the book,
Don't
Laugh At Me, by Alan Shamblin and Steve Seskin. |
 |
| Because of its strong anti-bulllying
message, this book, she told the teachers, is being made available
to all first-grade teachers in the districts that have an elementary
school near a branch of their bank. The bank representative also
left a copy for our library. The book, published by Tricycle Press,
has an accompanying curriculum, available at their website www.dontlaugh.org. Westwood
thanks Ms. Levisee and Texas First Bank for their partnership
and commitment to helping us learn to accept and celebrate differences
and build strong character. |

| The Prose Behind The Pixels |
| It's said that a
picture's worth a thousand words, so what's the story behind these
precious pixels? Picture this: It's two days before spring break
and Westwood's Assistant Principal has been off campus for a two-day
training, during which time the Counselor is acting as campus
administrator. |
 |
| So they're meeting first thing
Thursday to talk about what has happened at school during the
two days of his absence, what's done and what remains to be done.
Both were very tired and having trouble mustering up the enthusiasm
they'd need to face another day, especially a long one that would
culminate in Westwood's annual Spring Open House. |

As they were debriefing that morning, in walks
Blake, the booster shot that both adults needed, his journal in
hand. With just seven words and an adorable illustration, he delivered
a powerful message that would
re-vitalize both administrators in one fell swoop and give them
more-than-enough energy to make it through to their spring break
respite. The tables turned and a kindergarten kid encouraged and
inspired our leaders.
