Thanksgiving Feast
Westwood students spent the week prior to Thanksgiving studying about Pilgrims, Indians, the Mayflower, and Community. Pictured here are kindergarteners from Mrs. Vail's class enjoying their Thanksgiving Feast.
Accepting Award
Westwood Counselor Barbara Gruener and First Grade Teacher Jennifer Quigley traveled to Washington DC to accept the National Schools of Character Finalist
Award on behalf of their school and our community.
Westwood was selected one of the top 25 schools in the nation to be honored with this prestigious award for their character-building efforts as they work to dynamically shape hearts and minds for the future.

We Help Ourselves
Kathy Riggle from Family Outreach came by Westwood with her puppet friends in tow this week to share the WHO Program with our first graders. WHO, which stands for We Help Ourselves, is a program designed to empower children to keep themselves safe and free from harm.
Mrs. Riggle, who used to teach first grade herself, told the students that there were three simple steps to staying safe: 1. Know the Rules; 2. Be ready to do something in a scary situation, and 3. Know whom to tell. Students played a game show with the puppets and then role-played situations to give them real-life scenarios to which they could apply their strategies.
Students were each given a coloring packet with their safety rules in it and parents will be receiving a brochure about the presentation in the first-grade Friday folders. We thank Family Outreach and Mrs. Riggle for sharing this critical safety information with us.
