A Grand Celebration

Photographs may be enlarged.

Westwood hosted an especially GRAND event on Friday morning when third graders invited their grandparents to spend the morning reliving their elementary years. To prepare for this gathering, which included a spectacular musical performance, students interviewed their grandparents for glimpse into their childhood years.

The program, directed by music teacher Laura Rachita, was then custom-written based on their answers.

Our character cam caught third graders practicing hard this week to perfect their songs, which included the patriotic favorite, You're A Grand Old Flag, as well as our favorite character songs, I'll Understand, I'm Gonna Keep My Promises, and Make New Friends. The presentation concluded with an upbeat song, Oh Grandma and Grandpa, I Love You!, dedicated to all of our special guests.

A special preview Thursday night treated the community to a sneak peek at this musical extravaganza. Friday morning began with a delicious brunch, prepared by Jean Smith, our cafeteria manager and grandmother to her very own Westwood third grader this year. Grandparents spent 45 minutes enjoying the musical and another 45 minutes in the classroom reminiscing about the days and times of their third-grade experience with their special someone and his or her classmates. They all went home with a framed picture of their third grader.

Westwood extends its thanks to our grandparents for being a special part of our exciting day. We appreciate our partnership with Koman Furniture and our FISD Transportation Department for providing the bus shuttle for our grand guests.
