| Celebrating Character In
Our Community |
| Character Counts!
in our community, one business at a time. To celebrate National
CC! Week, Westwood Elementary administrators Lynn Hobratschk and
Lee Whitlock visited Red Top on Tuesday morning to present its
owner, Mr. Le, and his daughter Gabby, with a Character Counts!
poster so that he can carry on the school's work out in the real
world. |
 |
 |
| Noting that many of the Westwood
students and their families are regular customers at Red Top,
Mr. Le offered to display the Pillars of Character in his business
to reinforce that their character counts, not just in school,
but everywhere, all the time, even when nobody's looking. Westwood
appreciates the partnership with Red Top and thanks Mr. Le for
keeping the FISD mission alive in the community. |

| Making Lemonade |
| We're told that when
life gives us lemons, we should make lemonade, right? Students
in Mrs. Moffitt's second grade class found how exactly how to
make that sweet treat - and how to do so much more - when they
wrote their "how to" papers last week. |
 |
| Here's what Assistant Principal
Lee Whitlock, who stopped by the class and got in on the action
as a taste-tester, had to say about this hands-on activity: "This
is one of my favorite lessons that second grade does. It teaches
the children to think through, write about, and follow a process,
step by step, and then it yields yummy results." |

| Refreshing History |
| Dated 1982 and simply
signed with the name Deb, the first-grade hallway mural adjacent
to our Tile Wall of Fame en route to the Open Area is getting
a facelift. Artist Jennifer Pergande visited Westwood with sponges
and brushes in hand Tuesday to touch up the painting while adding
updates to the existing school-yard scene. |
 |
| The little red schoolhouse depicting
Westwood, for example, is now a brown brick building, the faded-orange
school bus now sports a brighter shade of yellow, and the formerly-sparse
pine tree more resembles the real trees that line the road in
front of Westwood. There are other subtleties, too, that enliven
the 25-year-old masterpiece, but you'll have to visit Westwood
to see those when the refreshing is finished on Thursday. |

| Kelso's Choices |
| Students at Westwood
using a new problem-solving system are jumping for joy at its
possibilities! |
 |
| Based on a little green frog
called Kelso, this system encourages children to discern between
small problems, those things which simply annoy you, and BIG problems,
those things which are scary or dangerous and require adult intervention
and help. Each classroom has hung a Kelso poster where students
can go and visually see their options for working out their little
differences. Their choices might include ignore the problem, share
and take turns, make a deal, apologize, or talk it out. When students
decide how to solve a problem, it empowers them to work things
out with their peers and refrain from the tattling that might
otherwise become a small (and sometimes big!) problem for their
teachers. Do ask your child(ren) to tell you all about Kelso;
we can't wait to see what learning to problem-solve by themselves
does for their confidence and self-esteem. |
