As September came
to a close, first graders launched into autumn with their Johnny
Appleseed (aka John Chapman) unit. Students discovered how one
man who lived in the woods planted seeds all the way from Massachusettes
to Fort Wayne, Indiana. They saw the impact that one little
seed can have on the future, as without Mr. Chapman's planting,
we might not even have apples today. They also studied fiction
versus non-fiction as many stories about Johnny Appleseed have
been distorted, blown out of proportion, or fictionalized in
some way.
Our little explorers
weighed apples, taste-tested apples, and created models of the
apple-tree lifecycle to look at its evolution through the seasons.
They also made pot headbands to wear in honor of Johnny Appleseed.
What a fun way to spring into fall.
