WESTWOOD PLEDGE

I will make good choices today.

I will respect myself, my teachers, and others.

And give my best effort in all I do.

Character Counts: Westwood parent Jean Varnado and his daughter, Andrea, have collaborated to create a song inspired by Westwood's character education efforts.

Click the speaker icon above to enjoy Character Counts, performed by third-grade Andrea Varnado and accompanied by her father.

We post their work with their permission and we thank the duo for their willingness to share this musical message with us.

A Bucket Filler
Sadie, a trained reading dog, visited small group counseling classes on Friday to help us learn about filling buckets. Figuratively, of course. Using the book, Have You Filled a Bucket Today?, by Carol McCloud, Mrs. Gruener helped classes look at how to fill the invisible buckets that everyone has.
A Novel Idea for the New Year

Books That Teach

Mrs. Moffitt read aloud the book, My Secret Bully, by Trudy Ludwig, in which Monica's friend Katie begins to call her names and humiliate her in front of other kids at school.

Character Counts & Red Ribbon Week

Character Counts! week is observed annually the third week of October by some 2,700,000 people around the world. This year, we set aside October 22-26, 2007 to celebrate the role that the pillars of character play in our lives. Dressed in our pillar colors each day, it promises to be an exciting week.

Celebrating Character In Our Community

Character Counts! in our community, one business at a time. To celebrate National CC! Week, Westwood Elementary administrators Lynn Hobratschk and Lee Whitlock visited Red Top on Tuesday morning to present its owner, Mr. Le, and his daughter Gabby, with a Character Counts! poster so that he can carry on the school's work out in the real world.

Noting that many of the Westwood students and their families are regular customers at Red Top, Mr. Le offered to display the Pillars of Character in his business to reinforce that their character counts, not just in school, but everywhere, all the time, even when nobody's looking. Westwood appreciates the partnership with Red Top and thanks Mr. Le for keeping the FISD mission alive in the community.

Excellence in Sports

A lot of our students play sports outside of school. Is your child one of them? Does he or she have an outstanding coach that you'd like to honor?

Is there an administrator over the whole league who's an exemplary role model to our FISD youth? The National Council for Youth Sports is seeking nominations for the STRIVE (Sports Teach Respect Initiative Values and Excellence) Awards. Visit their website for all of the details.

Nomination forms are only one page long and are due June 30, 2008.

What a great way to show that Character Counts in our community, too.

Wrap It Up

How are you a gift to Westwood? That's the question that Carolyn Poole's first graders were challenged to answer for this week's Show and Tell with a character twist.

Students brainstormed how they were "gifts" to the school before writing their answers down and wrapping them up in brightly-colored packages. One at a time on Friday, the beautiful gifts were opened during sharing circle time and each student got to talk with the group about the special qualities that he or she brings to their class family and our school community. Words like "nice" were followed up with prompts like, "What does nice look like?" and "How does nice sound?" The students enjoyed putting their character words into writing in this reflective activity. Mrs. Poole, selected this year's Westwood Teacher of the Year by her colleagues, is in her seventh year of teaching and her second year at Westwood.

A Character Connection

Frances Levisee from Texas First Bank visited first-grade teachers at Westwood on Monday with a special surprise that made a character connection. She presented them all with a complimentary copy of the book, Don't Laugh At Me, by Alan Shamblin and Steve Seskin.

Because of its strong anti-bulllying message, this book, she told the teachers, is being made available to all first-grade teachers in the districts that have an elementary school near a branch of their bank. The bank representative also left a copy for our library. The book, published by Tricycle Press, has an accompanying curriculum, available at their website www.dontlaugh.org. Westwood thanks Ms. Levisee and Texas First Bank for their partnership and commitment to helping us learn to accept and celebrate differences and build strong character.
